Jackson Morcate – “The Man of the Woods”

The Man of the Woods

Oh man of the woods, what is your wisdom?
What many things, privy tell, can you know
of your leafy, old, and great green kingdom?
Please, I beg of thee, enlighten and show!

I cried to him, and he smiled at me.
His lanky arms casted down to swaddle,
and with old calm eyes looking to pierce thee,
he spoke, “Young man, you are the one I coddle.”

And I ask, but why? Why do you look to
me? I hail from a people that is new!
My lands are but appalling concrete queues!
So tell me great one, what do I have due?

Leaning forward, he spoke his plight of truth:
“Because I envy your kingdom’s great youth.”
